Music notes: Olivia Rodrigo, Selena Gomez and more

Olivia Rodrigo might just be in lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-love. At the Tuesday, April 30, performance of her Guts World Tour in Dublin, Ireland, Olivia changed a lyric in her song "so american." Many fans took this as a nod to her boyfriend, Louis Partridge, who was in the crowd. Olivia changed “I don’t wanna assume this stuff/ But ain’t it love?/ Think I’m in love” to end with “‘Cause I’m in love” instead.

Selena Gomez is celebrating her boyfriend, Benny Blanco. In new photos shared to Instagram, Selena supported the release of Benny's new cookbook. "So proud of @itsbennyblanco - Open Wide is out now!!" Selena captioned photos of her posing with Benny and tasting cake. "life is better when i’m w u," Benny commented on the post.

In the promo for the May 4 episode of Saturday Night Live, for which Dua Lipa is set to pull double duty as host and musical guest, the singer helps cast member Chloe Fineman workshop her Dua impression. "I'm gonna actually just focus on my sketches, so I thought maybe you could, you know, do the performance for me," Dua jokes to Chloe.

Producer says it was Ryan Gosling's idea to use Taylor Swift song for 'The Fall Guy'

Universal

If you only know one thing about The Fall Guy, it's probably that in one scene Ryan Gosling's character sits in a car and cries while listening to Taylor Swift's song "All Too Well." It turns out the filmmakers were going to use a different song, until Gosling stepped in.

Producer Kelly McCormick tells Vanity Fair that The Fall Guy's director, David Leitch, who's also her husband, initially had a tune by late singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson playing in that scene. "But it felt a little melodramatic to me in a bad way," she says. McCormick says around the same time Gosling asked if they should try a Taylor song in the scene.

Accord to McCormick, her husband was against the idea until they went to see the Eras Tour. McCormick says David was blown away by Taylor's performance of the 10-minute version of the song.

"The first time we dropped it in, we knew there was no going back, and we were going to be really upset if we couldn’t get it," McCormick says.

Luckily, according to McCormick, "Taylor is actually really open to sharing her music with film. We showed her what we had cut, and there were no notes. Thankfully, she ... didn’t price herself so far out of our budget that we weren’t able to include her.”

According to Vanity Fair, Taylor hasn't seen the movie yet, but she did praise the comedic version of "All Too Well" that Gosling and co-star Emily Blunt did on Saturday Night Live on April 13. On her Instagram Story at the time, she wrote, "Watch me accidentally catch myself singing this version on tour."

Noah Kahan celebrates four-year anniversary of the EP "that completely changed" his life

Mercury/Republic

Noah Kahan released a vinyl version of his 2020 EP Cape Elizabeth for Record Store Day last year. This year, he's marking the EP's four-year anniversary with a post about the record that he says "woke me up."

"Cape Elizabeth isn't just an EP to me," he writes on his Instagram Story. "It's a line in the sand that I have never stepped over again. Music is supposed to be fun. Music isn't supposed to make you bored and depressed and jealous and angry. It should be the same thing it was to you as a kid; a magic trick that makes you and the listener understand each other and yourselves."

"Cape Elizabeth was the first time in so long I felt like a kid again," he continues. "When you guys accepted this EP with open arms it genuinely rearranged the cells in my brain and completely changed my life. I remembered something. I try to never forget it."

Noah recorded Cape Elizabeth during the pandemic, and it was an acoustic, folk-influenced project, unlike his 2021 album I Was/I Am, which he's said was more influenced by what his record label wanted from him.

Speaking about the EP, he told Variety last year, "It was the first time that I let myself just not care about how it sounded at the end ... I just wanted it to make me happy. And to see it connect with people really inspired me to write Stick Season. It kind of gave me the confidence to be like, 'All right, this niche-specific storytelling stuff can actually connect with people in a more universal way.'”

"I really owe it all to that EP, and it’s still probably my favorite piece of work I’ve made. I just love it."

Katy Perry praises Orlando Bloom for his new show, drags him for leaving his socks around

Peacock

Katy Perry is supportive of her fiancé Orlando Bloom's new show, To the Edge, in which he participates in death-defying activities like skydiving and rock climbing. She just wishes he'd be as disciplined when it comes to keeping the house tidy.

Katy posted photos of herself and Orlando, along with video clips of the crazy stunts he does in the show. She captioned the post, "In a world of AI/deepfakin/green-screenin/vfxing/stunt doublin etc etc my hero baby daddy @orlandobloom does it all and FOR REAL. If you haven’t seen #OnTheEdge [sic] on @peacock yet, buckle up and grab a ginger ale (like I did!) and stream it now…"

The caption continues with a note addressed directly to Orlando, asking him to "check slide nine." That slide is a photo of a pair of socks resting on what looks like a clothing hook.

"(CAN YOU PLEASE PUT YOUR SOCKS AWAY IN THE RIGHT PLACE FOR ONCE AND THEN FINALLY I WILL BE IMPRESSED)," Katy writes in all caps. "(I DONT NEED YOU TO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST OK)."

Dua Lipa's May pick for Service95 Book Club is an LGBTQ romance

Courtesy Dua Lipa

It may be hard to imagine that Dua Lipa has time to read, given all that she's doing to promote her new album, Radical Optimism, but she's officially announced the May pick for her Service95 Book Club.

The book is Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski, about two young men who fall in love in Communist Poland in the '80s, when such relationships were forbidden. Dua describes it as a "beautiful coming-of-age love story" that's "poetic and tender," yet "burning with a quiet rage at the persecution the LGBTQ+ community in Poland has suffered for decades and continues to fight against today."

As part of this month's Book Club content, Dua's done a Q&A with Tomasz. For context, you can read an article about LGBTQ rights in Poland; Tomasz has also contributed a reading list and a playlist of songs he listened to while writing the book.

Ed Sheeran announces 10th anniversary edition of 'X,' NYC anniversary show

AEG/MTG

June 21 will mark the 10th anniversary of the release of X (Multiply), the album that made Ed Sheeran a huge star.  He's celebrating that milestone with an anniversary show in New York City, and an anniversary edition of the album with nine bonus tracks.

The show takes place May 22 at Brooklyn's Barclay Center, and the setlist will match his 2015 live album, X (Wembley Edition).  Fans can pre-register for the pre-sale from now through May 2 at 11:59 p.m. ET via Seated. The tickets go on sale to the fans selected starting May 6 at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.

The 10th anniversary edition will be released on June 21, 10 years to the day of the album's original release. It'll be available on multiple formats, which are available for preorder now. One of those formats, called EcoRecord vinyl, is a new, more ecologically sustainable LP format.

X featured the hits "Don't," "Sing," "Photograph" and "Thinking Out Loud." The nine bonus tracks included on the anniversary edition will be making their debuts on vinyl. They include the movie soundtrack songs "I See Fire" and "All of the Stars," as well as "Take It Back," "Shirtsleeves," "Even My Dad Does Sometimes," "English Rose," "Touch and Go," "New York" and "Make It Rain."

On Instagram, Ed wrote of X, "This album was made from 2011 - 2014, and spanned my whole personal life through that time, which was a mad time."

"Going from playing pubs and clubs to selling arenas in those years, falling in and out of love, travelling all round the world, working with some of the best producers in the world, it was a real rollercoaster, and it’s been amazing to revisit all the memories," he added.

*NSYNC's Justin, Joey, Lance and Chris welcome May with the traditional jokes about ... you know

Getty Images/Bob Riha, Jr.

It's May 1, so on Tuesday, April 30, four-fifths of *NSYNC acknowledged what's now become a time-honored tradition: It's Gonna Be May Day.

In case you're unaware, when the group recorded their 2000 #1 hit "It's Gonna Be Me," producer Max Martin suggested that Justin Timberlake pronounce "me" as "may" because it sounded better. In 2012, a Tumblr user was the first to make the "It's Gonna Be May" joke in regard to the calendar and it soon became a popular meme.

Justin posted a video on Instagram Tuesday that starts with a woman asking, "What's a word you pronounced incorrectly one time and it still haunts you 'til this day?" Cut to Justin thinking for a second and then saying, "Me."

Lance Bass, meanwhile, posted a video of himself giving his husband, Michael, a card. When Michael opens it, he reads, "Roses are red, April is gray, but when you wake up tomorrow—" he stops reading and says, in a horrified tone, "Oh no!" Cut to Lance with a bunch of ramen noodles on his head — to mimic Justin's hairstyle in the 2000s — lip-synching, "It's gonna be May!"

"POV: your friend mispronounces a word once and now it’s a national holiday," reads the caption. "Happy #itsgonnabemay Day!"

Joey Fatone posted a video showing himself saying "It's Gonna Be May" while enjoying activities at Great Wolf Lodge, which is running a May discount special. Chris Kirkpatrick posted a video showing the co-host of his podcast, Name Drop, asking, "When are we gonna be back for Name Drop?" Cue Chris jumping into the frame to sing the line.

It seems JC Chasez sat this year out.

Scottish college offering crash course in Taylor Swift for clueless "parents and plus-ones"

TAS Rights Management

Some parents who take their kids to see Taylor Swift — or people who accompany Swifties to her concerts — may not necessarily be big fans. So how can they learn what to scream when, when to give Taylor a standing ovation, and what the difference is between "Bad Blood" and "Bejeweled"? One institute of higher learning in Scotland is ready to answer all those questions — for free.

While most college courses about Taylor offer deep dives into her music or career, Glasgow Clyde College has announced the Swiftie Masterclass for newbies — taught by a "Taylor Swift expert" — on May 7. That's exactly a month before the Eras Tour hits Scotland for three shows in Edinburgh.

The 90-minute course promises to make sure clueless attendees — "parents and plus-ones," as the college puts it — are up to speed on Eras Tour set lists, crowd chants and everything they'll need to get ready for the gigs. There's no word on whether or not friendship bracelet-making is one of the covered topics.

Attendance was limited, so it's no surprise the course has already reached capacity.

Music notes: Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and more

Sabrina Carpenter has earned her first #1 on Global Spotify with her hit single "Espresso." The singer took to Instagram to celebrate the achievement. "That is most certainly that me espresso!!!!" Sabrina wrote. "#1 global, UK and US ... cannot thank you enough."

Travis Kelce seems to be taking Taylor Swift down to "Florida!!!" The couple will join Patrick and Brittany Mahomes at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, The U.S. Sun reports. “Travis sees that Taylor is falling in love with sports, and he is excited to take her there, as she also wants to know more and more about his passions,” a source told the outlet. The trip will occur right before Taylor starts the European leg of The Eras Tour.

Kesha is gearing up to celebrate Pride in LA this year. The singer will headline WeHo Pride Presents Friday Night at OUTLOUD, a free outdoor concert that'll take place in West Hollywood on May 31. Kesha joins fellow headliners Kylie Minogue, Janelle Monáe and Diplo.

On June 12, Goo Goo Dolls will release their 2004 live album Live in Buffalo on vinyl for the first time. The show, recorded in their hometown of Buffalo, New York, on July 4 of that year, features hits like "Iris," "Name," "Slide," "Broadway" and "Black Balloon." You can preorder the limited-edition clear vinyl now.

'The Idea of You' star Nicholas Galitzine names his favorite boy band song

Prime Video

In the new movie The Idea of You, Anne Hathaway plays a 40-year-old mom who falls in love with the 24-year-old lead singer of August Moon, her teen daughter's former favorite boy band. In real life, Hathaway isn't much of a boy band fan, but Nicholas Galitzine, who plays the object of Hathaway's desire, has his favorite.

“I don’t know that much about boy bands. I was trying to be diplomatic, but the truth is, I’m going totally blank right now," Hathaway told Billboard when asked to name some of her favorites. She's a bigger fan of pop music made by women, naming Madonna's "Like a Prayer" as "the ultimate pop song." A close second, she says, is Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time."

"I think ‘Toxic’ is really amazing too," she added.

But Galitzine has some firsthand experience with boy band songs.

"There’s a song that I used to perform in front of my parents and my sister,” he told Billboard. "I think it was called ‘Incomplete’ by the Backstreet Boys. It’s so melodramatic, so I think that’s what makes it a perfect boy band song.”

That 2005 song was the first release from Backstreet Boys after they regrouped following a two-year break. It reached #13 on the chart and was RIAA-certified Gold.

The Idea of You arrives on Prime May 2.

Get the story behind Selena Gomez's delicious love note from Benny Blanco

Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

On her Instagram Story Monday, Selena Gomez posted a note written on a paper towel that said, "I love you! Sleep well! I made you steak!" and was signed with a heart. Selena tagged her boyfriend, music producer and chef Benny Blanco, and added a heart. But if you want to know the backstory, you can watch a video on Instagram in which Benny appears to be auditioning for the title of World's Best Boyfriend.

In his Instagram video, Benny explains that Selena is working, so he's going to cook her a special meal, go to her work and drop it off for her as a surprise. "Whenever I wanna put a smile or her face, or get laid, I just make her steak," he says. He proceeds to whip up what he describes as "the best steak dinner she's ever had": meat, perfectly fried potatoes and a Caesar salad with homemade croutons.

Benny packs up the food, then reveals that he attempted to bring it to Selena's work but they "gave her the day off," so he heads to her house, lets himself in and discovers she's sleeping. So he puts the food on her nightstand and writes her the note to let her know it's there. Ain't love grand?

"Finally someone treating Selena the way she deserves," one fan commented.

"[F]or everyone that keeps asking how he got Selena. THIS is how," another fan commented. "I want my own Benny Blanco. he's cute, dresses well, talented af, funny, AND can cook like wtf. he's quite literally perfect. idk why everyone is so confused."

"He's in love and there's no guessing, no wondering, he wears it on his sleeve," added another. "What more could a woman want?"

Katy Perry wants fans to have "strong feelings" about her music, not her haircut

Disney/Eric McCandless

Katy Perry appeared on American Idol on April 29 with a shoulder-length shag haircut that she'd documented getting on Instagram with the caption "thoughts, comments, concerns?" When some fans freaked out, she revealed she had just trolled them.

After the initial "haircut," video, Katy then posted a video saying, "You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my haircut. Let's see that energy for KP6. 'Cause this is just a wig."

So far, Katy hasn't announced when KP6 — her next album — will arrive.

Fans did, however, have strong feelings. One, recalling when Katy had short hair around the time of her underperforming 2017 album Witness, commented, "You really can’t control yourself can you? Someone needs to keep the scissors away from your head. We don’t want Witness 2.0."

Another wrote, "When we said justice for witness… we didn’t mean recreate it."

Other fans defended Katy, with one writing, "What a babe no matter what hair length always bringing it. Another chimed in, "I STILL LOVE YOU LONG OR SHORT."

Adam Levine approves of Toronto Raptors star's rendition of Maroon 5 hit

Interscope

A few weeks ago, Maroon 5 reposted to their Instagram Story a video that Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger had shared, showing him dancing to the band's hit "Moves Like Jagger" with an animated "GOAT" — "Greatest of All Time" — graphic. Now, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine has given his approval to a celebrity's rendition of another one of their classic hits.

On his Instagram Story, Adam posted video of the Toronto Raptors' star forward Scottie Barnes singing Maroon 5's 2004 single "This Love" at karaoke in Cancun in April. He tagged both Barnes and the band in the post, adding a couple of exclamation points.

Barnes reposted the video to his own Story, adding the comment, "Too good" and the laughing-til-you-cry emoji.

Maroon 5 returns to Las Vegas for their residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM starting May 17; they're touring the East Coast in June with Maren Morris. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Adam teased that the band's new album will sound "like it did in the very beginning."

Is Taylor Swift attending the Met Gala? Depends on who you ask

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

There are conflicting reports as to whether or not Taylor Swift will grace the red carpet at this year's Met Gala, which takes place in New York City on May 6.

TMZ reported that Taylor and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, had been invited but said they weren't coming. However, Page Six is now reporting that it's "exclusively learned" that Taylor will be there, but it's not clear whether Travis will be.

Meanwhile, E! says it's confirmed that Taylor is skipping the event so she can, understandably, get ready to launch the European leg of the Eras Tour, which starts May 9 in Paris. E! says it's "likely" that Travis will also be a no-show.

And Entertainment Tonight agrees with E!, reporting that Taylor won't walk the red carpet because of the tour.

Taylor's first Met Gala was in 2008; she's attended six times, with her most recent appearance being in 2016, when she wore Louis Vuitton.
